The 50mm appears sharper but, as you say, it's not a fair comparison. The 50mm has a narrower depth of field so it throws a lot of both foreground and background out of focus which makes the subject appear much sharper.
Agreed! It was something I just decided to do because I happened on the same spot and had the 50 with me. I'm just really impressed with how well the 50 holds its own against much more expensive glass. It's a great little lens and a terrific value!
I bought the 50 Macro strictly for digitizing my hundreds of old rolls of Tri-X, but it has wormed its way into my daily carry bag. It's a fantastic lens; I love it!

I use the DFA 50mm f2.8 macro frequently and love it! It works beautifully on my K3ii and MZS for film. Very sharp and affordable!
